When it comes to taking care of your smile, you may use fluoride to keep it strong and in great shape. As a parent, you may wonder if it has the same benefits for your child. It can be good at keeping their growing grin cavity-free, but when should you introduce it? To ensure you have all the information you need, here is a quick guide about this mineral and when it’s best to add it to your loved one’s routine.

What Exactly Does Fluoride Do?

Fluoride is effective at strengthening your enamel against decay, but you may wonder exactly how it does this. It delivers minerals that fortify enamel through a process called remineralization. This is especially helpful for baby teeth as the outer layer of them is thinner than that of permanent teeth. Bacteria can more easily erode it and cause cavities, but fluoride helps them stay strong.

Is Fluoride Dangerous for Kids?

Although fluoride can be beneficial for all smiles, it’s normal to be worried about introducing something new to your child. The good news is that there have been plenty of studies to find adequate, safe levels of it. In 2022, the International Association for Dental Research sought the impacts fluorinated water had on childhood development. Their findings were that there were no negative effects on their behavioral, emotional, and executive functioning!

That being said, you may be worried about exposing your child to too much fluoride. While it can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis, it’s relatively rare. Many products have been adjusted to account for one another, so using them as directed isn’t cause for much concern. Not only that, but it’s also only a cosmetic issue and doesn’t affect the way teeth function.

So, When Should I Introduce Fluoride?

With all that being said, fluoride is a great tool to use for your child’s smile, but when should you introduce it? You can as early as their first tooth! When you brush it, use only a grain-of-rice-sized amount. At about age three, you can then switch to a pea-sized.

However, you should also make sure your child spits their toothpaste instead of swallowing it! Many cities have also put this mineral in local water supplies, so having them drink it can be helpful as well.

In the end, you might be worried about fluoride in your child, but it can be a great thing for growing smiles. By talking to your dentist, you can also learn how to ensure you use it safely to get the full range of benefits.
